Thrive through Active Living

We all want to stay well. We may be motivated by a desire to be fully present for our loved ones or by a longing to live life to the fullest. Whatever the motivation may be, living well means taking care of ourselves. Going to a primary care physician, dentist or optometrist once or twice a year is crucial, but that does not equate to holistic wellness. Wellness is attained through daily habits that nurture our physical, mental and emotional health, all of which are possible through active living. Active living is not just about physical fitness. Moving our bodies also improves our mental and emotional health by reducing stress and anxiety and encouraging better cognition and sleeping patterns. By nurturing the body and mind in tandem, active living lays the foundation for a more vibrant existence. Let’s change our mindset from surviving to thriving and achieve a balanced and fulfilling life!  As fall approaches and the heat of summer begins to fade slightly here in Waco, there are numerous opportunities to practice an active lifestyle in our local great outdoors.

HIKE

If you haven’t explored all that Cameron Park has to offer, the 416 acres of forest, meadow and bluff provides the perfect place to get in your steps. Whether you want to take a leisurely stroll along the river or conquer more difficult terrain, there is a trail for you! Cameron Park’s River Trail is an easy path that follows the Brazos River and connects to the Waco Riverwalk to carry you all the way to McLane Stadium! Whether you are a beginner or an expert, look at the Cameron Park trail system to find the perfect trail for you!

BIKE

More adventurous mountain bikers can explore Cameron Park’s trails for rugged terrain, but we recommend starting on Waco’s Riverwalk, a paved scenic ride along the Brazos River. Don’t have a bicycle? Borrow an electric bike from Bike the Brazos, the only local company providing Monday Motorbikes rentals and leases! You can even pick one up at the Backyard Bar Stage and Grill — a perfect starting point for a downtown and Riverwalk adventure.

PADDLE

The Brazos River, Lake Waco and Bosque River provide endless opportunities for water sports. Move your body in the process by choosing kayaking, paddle boarding or canoeing.

CAMP

Looking for a more immersive experience? Find a retreat at a local cabin! Camp Fimfo’s cabins and camp sites provide access to a water park, pool, basketball court and tennis court and activities like yard games, fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding and so much more! Brazos Bluffs Ranch’s densely wooded trails and guided sunset horseback rides provide an deeper escape into nature. With no other homes in sight, their stone and log vacation home and secluded cabins make the perfect remote get-away!

Let’s go Waco! Lace up your hiking boots, grab your bike or rent a paddle board, and embark on an active adventure that will nourish your body and soul. Treat yourself to new outdoor equipment from The Bear Mountain to get your adventure started.
