If there’s one thing all Texas can agree upon, it’s the appreciation of a good home cooked meal. (Why yes, the jalapenos on our enchiladas do count as a vegetable.) You’ll never go hungry in Waco, and that’s just one of the reasons we love to call this city home.
Whether you’re a local who needs a reminder of where to take the family to eat on a Friday night, or an out-of-towner in search of the best restaurants in Waco to try the local eats (welcome!), we’ve got you covered.
George’s is everything to love about dining out in Texas: a wait staff who makes you feel like family, a laid-back and unpretentious atmosphere, and one of the best servings of Chicken Fried Steak that Waco has to offer. Don’t forget to try the Big O Beer (it’s famous around these parts!), along with their Crazy Wings.
If you go to Texas without indulging in Tex-Mex, did you even go to Texas? Ninfa’s is famous for its quirky and cool interior, complete with high ceilings and colorful decor, making it a great spot to catch up with girlfriends over Ninfaritas and, our personal favorite, Crawfish Enchiladas.
Viteks is quite famously known as one of Chip Gaines’s favorite local haunts, and we’d have to whole-heartedly agree with his assessment. Their signature dish is The Gut Pack: smoked sausage, barbecue, beans, cheese, and more, piled proudly atop a heap of Fritos. Not exactly a health food but if we wanted chia seeds for lunch we’d set up shop in California, am I right?
If you haven’t experienced a family meal at Cafe Homestead yet, then allow us to educate you on what you’re missing. This spot is a little off the beaten path, but that just adds to its rustic, rural charm. The food here is organic, farm-to-table fare, and the pecan pancakes and quesadilla burger are the standout menu items for us. Oh, and the cheese plate. For the love of Pete, don’t skip the cheese plate.
Okay so we have two BBQ restaurants on our list—what did you expect? Guess BBQ’s brisket will melt in your mouth, and the coleslaw is good enough to convert even non-coleslaw lovers. Simply put: It’s a must-visit.
